Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, has openly criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris for her 2024 campaign’s reliance on wealthy donors. During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” hosted by Dana Bash, Sanders reiterated his concerns about Harris’ campaign strategy. He argued that the influence of billionaires hindered her ability to address issues affecting working families. Sanders emphasized that Harris’ campaign failed to develop a robust agenda that tackled economic challenges faced by the working class.
Sanders pointed out the growing income and wealth inequality in the United States, highlighting that 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. He criticized the nation’s healthcare system as broken and dysfunctional, noting that despite high spending, the U.S. remains the only major country without guaranteed healthcare for all citizens. Sanders questioned how a presidential campaign could overlook these critical issues.
In his discussion with Bash, Sanders stressed the importance of standing firmly with the working class to secure Democratic victories. He called for an agenda that directly addresses the needs of working people, including guaranteed healthcare and an increased minimum wage. Sanders also advocated for accessible higher education for all children, regardless of income, as a means to compete in a global economy.
Sanders described America’s political system as “broken and corrupt,” attributing its flaws to the power wielded by economic and political oligarchs. When asked about his potential candidacy in 2028, Sanders dismissed the idea due to his age but expressed a desire to support a progressive candidate who can rally grassroots support across America.
