Beto O’Rourke Draws Parallels Between 2025 America and 1933 Germany

Former Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke recently made a striking comparison between the United States in 2025 and Germany in 1933. Speaking on Governor Gavin Newsom’s podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom,” O’Rourke expressed his concerns about the future of American democracy. He likened the current political climate to the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, suggesting that history books might one day draw similar parallels.
O’Rourke’s comments came during a discussion about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s investigation into his Powered by People PAC. The investigation centers on allegations that the PAC violated laws by assisting Texas state Democrats in leaving the state to avoid a quorum during a redistricting standoff. O’Rourke praised these Democrats as defenders of democracy, contrasting them with Republicans whom he compared to the enablers of authoritarianism.
O’Rourke’s analogy extends beyond mere political critique. He warned that Republicans, particularly under the Trump administration, could be remembered similarly to how history views the Nazi Party’s rise to power. He emphasized that while history may not repeat itself exactly, it often rhymes, suggesting that current events echo past authoritarian regimes.
This is not the first time O’Rourke has drawn such comparisons. In 2019, he criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, likening them to actions taken by Nazi Germany. He condemned Trump’s rhetoric, particularly regarding immigrants and Muslims, as reminiscent of fascist ideologies.
The political landscape remains tense as figures like Senator John Cornyn call for further investigations into O’Rourke’s PAC. These developments underscore ongoing divisions within American politics and highlight concerns about democratic integrity and governance.
