Biden Aide Faces Intense House GOP Inquiry Over Alleged Cover-Up

Ashley Williams’ Lengthy Testimony in GOP Probe

Ashley Williams, a longtime aide to former President Joe Biden, underwent a nearly six-hour closed-door session with House investigators. The inquiry, led by Republicans, focuses on allegations that Biden’s top aides concealed his mental decline. A source familiar with the interview revealed that Williams frequently stated she could not “recall” details on numerous occasions. These included whether she had spoken with Biden recently, the use of teleprompters in Cabinet meetings, discussions about Biden using a wheelchair, cognitive tests, or any mental or physical decline.

Williams Defends Biden’s Fitness for Office

Despite the probing questions, Williams maintained that President Biden is fit for office. The investigation also explores whether any presidential orders were signed via autopen without Biden’s knowledge. So far, all allegations have been denied by Biden’s allies. Republican investigators have highlighted concerns following Biden’s June 2024 debate performance and subsequent media revelations about his fitness for office.

Committee Dynamics and Political Reactions

The meeting was staff-led, but Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, briefly attended to express solidarity with Williams. Crockett emphasized the importance of correcting any mischaracterizations about the former president. She did not participate in questioning but noted the ongoing nature of the interview before leaving for another engagement.

Williams’ Role and Background

Williams has a longstanding association with Biden, dating back to her support for Jill Biden during the Obama administration. She played significant roles in Biden’s 2020 campaign and presidential transition team before serving as deputy director of Oval Office operations and special assistant to the president. Her tenure concluded as deputy assistant to the president and senior advisor. Currently, she continues to work as a senior advisor in the Office of Former President Joe Biden.

Ongoing Investigation into Biden’s Cognitive Health

Williams is the third individual to testify before committee investigators recently. Former White House physician Kevin O’Connor also provided a sworn deposition after being subpoenaed by Committee Chairman James Comer. The investigation remains a focal point of Republican scrutiny as they examine potential cover-ups regarding Biden’s cognitive health.
