Michael Donilon, a longtime advisor to former President Joe Biden, recently testified before the House Oversight Committee. According to a source familiar with the proceedings, Donilon disclosed that he stood to earn up to $8 million if Biden had won re-election in 2024. This revelation came during a closed-door session as part of an investigation into whether Biden’s inner circle concealed evidence of his alleged mental decline.
Donilon’s association with Biden spans over four decades, beginning in 1981 when he first worked for Biden, then a U.S. senator from Delaware. Throughout Biden’s presidency, Donilon served as a senior advisor and was a key strategist for both the 2020 and 2024 campaigns. His testimony highlighted his deep involvement in Biden’s political career and campaign strategies.
During his testimony, Donilon confirmed that he received $4 million for his work on Biden’s 2024 campaign. He further explained that an additional $4 million would have been contingent upon Biden securing a second term. This information was corroborated by reports from Axios reporter Alex Thompson and CNN host Jake Tapper in their book “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.”
Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race following a challenging debate against Donald Trump in June of that year. The decision came amid growing pressure from fellow Democrats. Donilon expressed his belief that both pundits and Democratic lawmakers overreacted to Biden’s debate performance, arguing that Biden’s communication skills had improved during his presidency.
In his opening statement, Donilon emphasized his admiration for Biden’s leadership throughout his presidency. He highlighted the administration’s achievements, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and implementing significant legislative measures like the Inflation Reduction Act. Despite acknowledging some challenges in Biden’s public presence, Donilon maintained that Biden remained an engaged and effective leader.
Donilon is the eighth former official from the Biden administration to testify in this ongoing investigation led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer. The probe seeks to uncover any potential cover-ups related to Biden’s health and decision-making processes during his presidency.
