Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, has come under scrutiny following allegations of possessing two voter ID cards. The Election Commission has issued a notice to Sinha, a senior BJP leader, demanding an explanation for his registration as a voter in both Lakhisarai and Bankipur constituencies. This development has sparked a significant political controversy, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi leading the charge against alleged fake voters.
The issue gained traction when Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar shared screenshots on social media, showing Sinha’s name listed in the draft electoral rolls for both constituencies. The Electoral Registration Officer of Bankipur has now formally requested Sinha to clarify his dual registration by August 14. In response, Sinha has maintained that he votes from only one location, accusing Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav of spreading misinformation.
Tejashwi Yadav has been vocal in questioning the integrity of the electoral process, highlighting the presence of Sinha’s name in two constituencies despite a Special Intensive Revision by the Election Commission. Yadav has called for accountability, questioning whether Sinha or the Election Commission should be held responsible and demanding Sinha’s resignation.
In defense, Vijay Kumar Sinha explained that he had applied to transfer his voter registration from Bankipur to Lakhisarai and had submitted forms to remove his and his family’s names from Bankipur. However, due to unspecified reasons, his name was not removed from the Bankipur rolls. Meanwhile, BJP’s Jagadambika Pal countered Yadav’s allegations by accusing him of similar discrepancies in voter registration.
The controversy has put the Election Commission’s procedures under the spotlight, with questions raised about the effectiveness of their revisions and checks. As political parties exchange accusations, the situation underscores the importance of maintaining transparency and accuracy in electoral rolls to uphold democratic processes.
