The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has confirmed that the next Vice President of India will be a veteran leader from within its ranks, dismissing rumors that Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar might be considered for the position. According to top sources within the party, the new Vice President will be someone who aligns closely with the BJP’s ideology. This announcement comes in the wake of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation, which has left the position vacant.
Speculation had arisen following a meeting between JDU leader and Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur and BJP chief JP Nadda. However, BJP sources have clarified that this was merely a routine interaction and not indicative of any discussions regarding the Vice Presidential post. They further emphasized that no conversations have taken place with JDU leadership about this matter.
The Election Commission has begun preparations for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. The commission has stated that the poll schedule will be announced after completing necessary formalities. Key activities underway include preparing the Electoral College, finalizing Returning Officers, and compiling background material on previous Vice-Presidential elections.
The Opposition has not yet proposed a candidate for the Vice Presidential election. Historically, only four out of sixteen elections for this post have been uncontested, suggesting that the Opposition may soon announce their nominee.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation has sparked various theories regarding his departure. Officially citing health reasons, his resignation came after tensions with the government over several issues, including his acceptance of an opposition-backed motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma. Government sources indicate that Dhankhar’s actions, perceived as favoring Opposition voices and questioning government policies, led to plans for a no-confidence motion against him if he did not step down.
Amidst speculation about potential candidates, some suggested that the BJP might choose a leader from its ally JDU, possibly Nitish Kumar, to strengthen its position ahead of the Bihar elections. However, BJP sources have firmly dismissed these claims, reiterating their decision to select a candidate from within their own party.
