In a shocking incident that has heightened tensions in Patna, BJP leader Surendra Kewat was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle in Sheikpura. The 52-year-old leader suffered four bullet wounds and was immediately rushed to AIIMS in Patna, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. This tragic event follows closely on the heels of the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka, who was killed outside his home just a week prior.
Following the incident, MLA Gopal Ravidas and former Minister Shyam Rajak visited the hospital to meet with Mr. Kewat’s family and urged the hospital administration to expedite formalities. The police have launched an investigation, with forensic teams deployed to gather evidence. Raids are underway to apprehend the perpetrators, as confirmed by police officer Kanhaiya Singh.
The murder of Surendra Kewat has sparked panic and concern among residents, particularly given its timing during an election year. The incident poses a significant challenge for the Nitish Kumar government, which is already under scrutiny for its handling of law and order issues. Opposition leaders, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, have criticized the state government, questioning its ability to maintain safety and security.
Tejashwi Yadav took to social media platform X to express his discontent with the current administration, highlighting the lack of accountability within the NDA government. He questioned the role of the BJP deputy chief ministers amidst rising crime rates. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has also voiced his concerns, accusing the BJP and Nitish Kumar’s government of failing to curb crime in Bihar.
In response to these criticisms, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi defended the state government’s efforts to combat crime, accusing opposition parties of supporting criminal elements to tarnish the government’s image. He emphasized that criminals are not tolerated in Bihar and that law enforcement is actively addressing these challenges.
