The body of Naseeruddin, a man who vanished 28 years ago, has been found remarkably preserved in a glacier in Pakistan’s Kohistan region. This discovery was made near the Lady Meadows glacier, where locals stumbled upon the body on July 31. An identity card found with the remains confirmed that it was indeed Naseeruddin, who had disappeared during a family trip aimed at escaping a violent feud.
In June 1997, Naseeruddin was traveling on horseback with his brother Kathiruddin when he fell into a crevasse during a snowstorm. The brothers had sought refuge in the mountains to avoid a village dispute. While Kathiruddin survived, Naseeruddin was not seen again until his body was discovered decades later. The extreme cold of the glacier preserved his body, halting decomposition and mummifying it due to the lack of moisture and oxygen.
For years, Naseeruddin’s family tirelessly searched for him. His nephew, Malik Ubaid, recounted how relatives repeatedly visited the glacier in hopes of retrieving his body but eventually gave up. The recent discovery has brought relief to the family, who have finally been able to lay him to rest.
The Kohistan region, once known for its consistent snowfall, is now experiencing accelerated glacial melt due to rising global temperatures linked to climate change. Pakistan is home to over 13,000 glaciers, more than any other country outside the polar regions. This environmental shift has contributed to the exposure of long-hidden remains like Naseeruddin’s.
