Two Boxers, Both 28, Die from Brain Injuries in Japanese Matches

Tragic Loss in Japanese Boxing

The Japanese boxing community is mourning the loss of two 28-year-old boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, who tragically died from brain injuries sustained during their matches on the same fight card. This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the sport, highlighting the inherent risks involved in boxing.

Details of the Fateful Matches

Shigetoshi Kotari faced Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation junior lightweight champion Yamato Hata in a grueling 12-round match on August 2. Despite ending in a draw, Kotari collapsed shortly after the fight concluded. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma—a condition where blood accumulates between the brain and skull. Unfortunately, Kotari succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Hiromasa Urakawa’s bout against Yoji Saito ended in a knockout loss. Like Kotari, Urakawa required urgent medical attention and underwent a craniotomy in an attempt to save his life. Despite these efforts, he too passed away, leaving the boxing world reeling from these consecutive tragedies.

Response from the Boxing Community

In light of these events, the World Boxing Organization expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased fighters, as well as to the entire Japanese boxing community. The organization took to social media to share their sorrow during this difficult time. The Japanese Boxing Commission has responded by announcing a significant change: all OPBF title bouts will now be reduced from 12 rounds to 10. This decision aims to enhance fighter safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Global Context of Boxing Fatalities

These incidents are not isolated. Earlier this year, Irish boxer John Cooney died following his Celtic super-featherweight title defeat in Belfast. Similarly, a Nigerian boxer passed away after collapsing in the ring during a fight in April. These occurrences underscore the ongoing concerns about safety within the sport.
