A Brazilian TV reporter, Clara Nery, experienced a harrowing incident just moments before going live on air. The event unfolded on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, where Nery was preparing to report for Band Rio. As she stood ready to deliver her segment, a man on a motorbike attempted to snatch her phone. The entire episode was captured on camera, showcasing the brazen nature of the robbery attempt.
Despite the shock of the situation, Nery managed to retrieve her phone after the thief dropped it during his escape. She later shared her experience on Instagram, expressing relief that the situation ended without harm. Her post included footage of the incident and gratitude for the support she received from colleagues and law enforcement.
Nery has called for public assistance in identifying the suspect, emphasizing the need to share his image widely. She noted that the motorcycle’s license plate was obscured with cardboard, complicating identification efforts. The Military Police and Civil Police are actively investigating, reviewing footage to track down the perpetrator.
This incident highlights a broader issue in Rio de Janeiro, where phone thefts have surged by 27% in June compared to last year. Over 2,300 phones were reported stolen in June 2025 alone, according to data from the Rio de Janeiro Public Security Institute. Nery’s experience underscores the ongoing challenges faced by residents and authorities in combating street crime.
Nery expressed confidence in the police forces’ ability to apprehend the suspect but voiced concerns about the judicial system’s ability to keep such criminals detained. She highlighted a pattern of repeat offenses due to lenient detention policies.
