Idaho prosecutor Bill Thompson has suggested that Bryan Kohberger might have used a second weapon during the tragic murders of four University of Idaho students. In an interview with the Idaho Statesman, Thompson noted that some injuries on victim Kaylee Goncalves, 21, appeared inconsistent with those typically caused by a knife. Although he stopped short of confirming the use of another weapon, Thompson stated, “There were injuries that appeared to have been caused by something other than the knife, although it could have been the knife.” This uncertainty leaves open the possibility of an additional weapon being involved in the attack.
Court documents have revealed the brutal nature of the attack on Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Goncalves suffered “more than 20 stab wounds” along with blunt-force trauma, as detailed in recently released Moscow Police Department documents. These findings underscore the severity and violence of the incident that shocked the community.
Dylan Mortensen, a surviving roommate, encountered Kohberger as he fled through a sliding door at their rental property. Prosecutor Thompson speculated that Kohberger may have panicked upon seeing Mortensen. “At that point, he’d been in the house probably longer than he planned,” Thompson explained. This unexpected encounter might have prompted Kohberger to leave hastily, fearing law enforcement had been alerted.
Thompson emphasized the importance of DNA evidence in linking Kohberger to the crime scene. The DNA found on a knife sheath was pivotal for building a strong case against him. Without this evidence, securing a conviction would have been challenging. The prosecutor highlighted how crucial this forensic link was for trial purposes.
The case has drawn significant attention from both local authorities and national media. James Fry, former chief of the Moscow Police Department, mentioned various theories about why Mortensen survived, including Kohberger’s possible exhaustion after committing multiple murders. The community continues to grapple with the aftermath as families prepare to address Kohberger directly at his sentencing.
