Four Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya Police following a violent incident at the India-Bangladesh border. The suspects allegedly attacked an Indian villager, Balsrang A Marak, who operates a shop near the border. The attack occurred at night when Marak was abducted by eight to nine armed men who entered his shop.
Marak managed to escape his captors by sprinting to a nearby house as the gang fired shots at him. This prompted an immediate response from the BSF and local police, who launched an operation to capture the suspects. Three of the Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended after police fired warning shots as they attempted to flee back to Bangladesh. A fourth suspect was captured by local villagers.
Before their arrest, the suspects discarded weapons, cash, mobile phones, and an identity card belonging to a Bangladeshi policeman, all of which have been recovered by authorities. The operation continues as law enforcement seeks to apprehend the remaining members of the gang.
Inspector General OP Upadhyay highlighted a surge in cattle smuggling and violent attacks on BSF personnel along the border. The challenging riverine terrain has been exploited by criminals for illegal activities, including looting natural resources. In response, the BSF has intensified surveillance and deployed advanced technology to monitor cross-border movements.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mefus Rehman, 35; Jangir Alom, 25; Meruphur Rahman, 32; and Saem Hussain, 30. The authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to curb organized crime networks operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
