Caitlin Clark, a standout player in the WNBA, made strategic choices during the WNBA All-Star Game draft, prioritizing her Fever teammates over Angel Reese. Last year, Clark and Reese played together on “Team WNBA” against Team USA in preparation for the Paris Olympics. This year, as a team captain at her home venue, Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Clark opted to remain loyal to her Fever teammates. Consequently, Angel Reese was selected by fellow captain Napheesa Collier during the draft held on Tuesday night. Clark and Collier earned their captain roles through a fan vote, finishing first and second, respectively. The draft was broadcast live on ESPN, where Clark made her first pick by selecting Aliyah Boston from her own team. Collier responded by choosing Breanna Stewart from the New York Liberty, highlighting their connection through the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league they co-founded. Clark continued her selections with Sabrina Ionescu from New York and also picked A’ja Wilson from the Las Vegas Aces and Satou Sabally from the Phoenix Mercury. Collier capitalized on Clark’s decision not to select Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers by adding her to her team. Collier’s lineup was further strengthened with Alisha Gray from the Atlanta Dream and Nneka Ogwumike from the Seattle Storm. As the draft moved to reserves, Collier picked Courtney Williams from her Lynx team, while Clark chose Kelsey Mitchell from the Fever. Angel Reese joined Collier’s bench after being affectionately referred to as “Mebounds,” a nod to her merchandise line that supports her foundation against cyberbullying. Clark rounded out her team with Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen from the Washington Mystics. Collier added Kelsey Plum from the Los Angeles Sparks and Rhyne Howard from the Atlanta Dream to her roster. The draft concluded with Alyssa Thomas joining Collier’s team and Jackie Young, Kayla Thornton, and Gabby Williams joining Clark’s squad. Although player trades were possible, Clark chose not to engage in them. Instead, she and Collier agreed to trade coaches if allowed, resulting in Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve coaching Clark’s team. The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 19 in Indianapolis, with additional events like a skills competition and three-point contest set for July 18.
