Gabriel Vigil, a 34-year-old “walk-on” baseball coach and substitute groundskeeper at Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School in Long Beach, California, has been charged with multiple sex crimes against a female student. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges, which include one felony count each of sexual penetration of a person under 18, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger, oral copulation of a person under 18, contacting a minor for a sexual offense, and distributing or showing pornography to a minor.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the seriousness of the charges and the commitment of his office to prosecute individuals who exploit their positions of trust within educational settings. He stated, “Sex predators who exploit their position of trust in a school setting and target minors should know that my office will work with law enforcement to find you, arrest you and hold you fully accountable.” The DA’s office is working closely with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
Vigil appeared in court on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The judge set his bail at $250,000. In addition to the aforementioned charges, Vigil faces two felony counts of meeting a minor for lewd purposes. Prosecutors allege that these crimes occurred at multiple locations, including Vigil’s apartment.
The Long Beach Unified School District has confirmed that Vigil is no longer employed by the district. A spokesperson stated that any incident raising safety concerns is promptly investigated in accordance with district protocols. The district is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Prosecutors suspect there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to contact the Long Beach Police Department. The case highlights the importance of vigilance and thorough investigation in protecting students from exploitation.
