CBSE Mandates CCTV Installation in Schools for Enhanced Student Safety

CBSE’s New Safety Guidelines for Schools

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive requiring all affiliated schools to enhance their safety measures by installing high-resolution CCTV cameras. This initiative is part of an updated set of safety guidelines aimed at ensuring a secure environment for students and staff. The new regulations stipulate that these cameras must be equipped with audiovisual recording capabilities and cover all classrooms and common areas, with the exception of toilets and washrooms.

Ensuring Comprehensive Coverage

The CBSE’s mandate specifies that the CCTV cameras should provide comprehensive coverage of school premises. This includes not only classrooms but also playgrounds and other common areas where students gather. By doing so, the board aims to deter potential safety threats and ensure that any incidents can be promptly addressed. The presence of cameras is expected to act as a deterrent to inappropriate behavior, thereby fostering a safer school environment.

Storage and Accessibility of Footage

An essential aspect of the new guidelines is the requirement for schools to store CCTV footage for a minimum of 15 days. This provision ensures that any incidents can be reviewed and investigated if necessary. Furthermore, schools are required to make this footage available to authorities upon request, facilitating transparency and accountability in handling safety concerns.

Alignment with NCPCR’s Safety Manual

The CBSE’s directive aligns with the safety manual issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). This alignment underscores the importance of creating a supportive and secure environment for students. By adhering to these guidelines, schools demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding students’ well-being.

Implications for School Administration

Implementing these guidelines will require schools to invest in appropriate technology and infrastructure. School administrations will need to ensure that the installation and maintenance of CCTV systems are conducted efficiently. Additionally, staff may require training on how to manage and utilize the surveillance systems effectively.
