The tragic shooting at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta has taken a new turn with revelations about the suspect’s possible motivations. Patrick Joseph White, 30, is accused of fatally shooting a police officer and firing multiple rounds at the CDC buildings. According to his father, White had become increasingly fixated on the COVID-19 vaccine, which he blamed for his depression and suicidal thoughts. This information was shared by a law enforcement official with the Associated Press.
White’s father had previously contacted law enforcement, identifying his son as a potential threat. He expressed concerns over White’s mental state following the death of his dog and his growing obsession with the COVID-19 vaccine. Neighbors also reported that White frequently voiced distrust of vaccines, believing they were harmful to himself and others.
The attack resulted in significant damage to at least four CDC buildings, as confirmed by Director Susan Monarez. Images from the scene depicted bullet-riddled windows, highlighting the severity of the incident. White was armed with five guns, including at least one long gun, during the attack.
Before targeting the CDC, White is suspected of killing DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose. Officer Rose was critically wounded and later died at Emory University Hospital. A former Marine who served in Afghanistan, Rose had recently graduated from the police academy and is survived by his pregnant wife and two children.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) described the crime scene as “complex,” indicating that a thorough investigation will take time. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum noted that it remains unclear whether White’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted or resulted from police gunfire.
