China Declares Dalai Lama Reincarnation a Domestic Matter

Tensions between China and India have intensified following remarks by China’s ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, regarding the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. Xu Feihong firmly dismissed the Dalai Lama’s statements about his own reincarnation, asserting that such matters are strictly internal affairs of China. This declaration comes in response to comments made by Indian Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who expressed support for the Dalai Lama’s autonomy in deciding his reincarnation.

Xu emphasized that the Chinese government maintains exclusive authority over religious titles and status within its borders. He criticized any external interference, underscoring China’s stance that the reincarnation process is not subject to international debate or influence. This position aligns with China’s broader policy of controlling religious practices and leadership within its jurisdiction, particularly concerning Tibetan Buddhism.

The issue of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation has long been a contentious topic between China and supporters of Tibetan autonomy. The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has suggested that his reincarnation might not occur within Chinese-controlled Tibet, which has further fueled tensions. China’s insistence on its authority over the process is seen as an effort to maintain control over Tibet and its religious institutions.

The diplomatic exchange highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions between China and India, particularly concerning Tibet. India’s historical support for the Dalai Lama and Tibetan refugees contrasts sharply with China’s policies. As both nations navigate their complex relationship, issues like the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation continue to serve as flashpoints in their diplomatic interactions.
