Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India on August 18 for discussions with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. This meeting comes just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This will be PM Modi’s first trip to China since the military tensions in Ladakh five years ago.
The visit occurs amidst a backdrop of heightened economic tensions, as United States President Donald Trump has imposed significant tariffs on both China and India. Notably, India faces a 50 percent tariff, including a 25 percent penalty related to its purchase of Russian weapons and oil. These tariffs have influenced the diplomatic dynamics between India and China, prompting both nations to reconsider their bilateral relations.
Wang Yi and Ajit Doval last met in June during an earlier SCO meeting. The SCO serves as a regional security bloc, fostering dialogue and cooperation among member states. The upcoming meeting is expected to further discussions on regional security and economic collaboration.
India-China relations have shown signs of improvement following the US tariff impositions. Earlier this year, the US and China engaged in a series of reciprocal import duties, escalating trade tensions. In response, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of India and China collaborating against hegemonism and power politics. He highlighted recent positive developments, such as military disengagement in Ladakh’s Depsang and Demchok regions.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has acknowledged China’s outreach efforts, indicating India’s commitment to fostering a more predictable and positive relationship with China. Proposed measures include resuming pilgrimages to Chinese-controlled sites, establishing direct flights, and facilitating journalist exchanges.
China has expressed optimism regarding PM Modi’s upcoming visit, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen ties. The SCO summit in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1 is expected to be a significant event, with potential bilateral meetings between PM Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
