Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has openly criticized the team management’s decision to select pacer Anshul Kamboj over Harshit Rana for the Test squad. This decision comes amid uncertainty regarding Akash Deep’s participation in the fourth Test due to injury concerns. Arshdeep Singh has already been ruled out of the match at Manchester’s Old Trafford because of a hand injury. Chopra expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency in the selection process, questioning why Harshit Rana, who was initially retained in England after an unofficial Test series, was later released.
Chopra highlighted that while Anshul Kamboj’s performance for India A was commendable, the decision to exclude Harshit Rana lacked clarity. He emphasized that if continuity was a factor, Rana should have been retained. Despite acknowledging Kamboj’s deserving spot in the team, Chopra criticized the selectors for not providing clear communication regarding their choices. He pointed out that such decisions often leave fans and analysts puzzled about the criteria used for player selection.
Harshit Rana, a promising 23-year-old bowler mentored by head coach Gautam Gambhir, has shown potential with his aggressive bowling style. However, his recent performances have been inconsistent. During an unofficial Test against England Lions in Canterbury, he conceded 99 runs for just one wicket in 27 overs. Despite his potential, it appears that Rana is still developing his skills for top-level red-ball cricket.
Anshul Kamboj is expected to make his Test debut when the fourth Test begins at Old Trafford on Wednesday, July 23. His inclusion in the squad marks a significant opportunity for him to showcase his talent on an international stage. As fans eagerly await the match, the debate over selection criteria continues to stir discussions among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike.
