England’s fast bowler Chris Woakes recently shared his experience of batting with a dislocated shoulder during the fifth Test match against India at The Oval. The injury occurred on Day 1, sidelining him for most of the match. However, on Day 5, with England needing 35 runs to win and only four wickets remaining, Woakes made the courageous decision to bat despite his injury. His arm was in a sling, and although he did not face any deliveries, he ran between the wickets, visibly in pain. This act of determination highlighted his commitment to the team.
On the final day of the series, Indian bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna delivered an impressive performance, reducing England to nine wickets down. Woakes’ decision to bat was driven by his unwavering resolve to contribute to his team’s efforts. In a recent interview, he expressed his disappointment over England’s narrow six-run defeat but emphasized that he never considered not batting, regardless of the circumstances.
Woakes recounted the physical challenges he faced while running between the wickets with teammate Gus Atkinson. Despite not facing a ball, each run was a struggle due to his injury. He described the intense pain during these moments, noting that instinct took over as he attempted to run naturally despite his arm being strapped down. His concern about further injuring his shoulder was evident when he removed his helmet and glove to check its condition.
Woakes’ efforts were acknowledged by both teammates and opponents. He received an ovation from the crowd and respect from Indian players who appreciated his determination. Reflecting on this experience, Woakes noted that any player would have done the same in such a situation, underscoring the spirit of sportsmanship that defines cricket.
