In July, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews swiftly responded to the dire situation in southern Syria, where Syrian Druze and Christians were under severe threat from jihadist forces. The organization, led by President and Global CEO Yael Eckstein, coordinated efforts to deliver essential medical supplies and equipment to the region. This marked the Fellowship’s first operation in Syria, prompted by an urgent call from a hospital in Sweida needing critical resources such as medicines, surgical care, and first responder equipment.
The city of Sweida became a focal point of violence as Syrian-backed jihadist fighters launched attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,400 people. Among the victims was Hosam Saraya, a Syrian American visiting family. The attacks were part of a broader campaign by Islamists loyal to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, targeting both Druze and Christian communities. The Fellowship’s efforts included supplying retired Israeli ambulances to aid local operations amidst the chaos.
Israel intervened militarily to prevent further massacres by targeting Bedouin forces en route to Sweida and striking Syrian Defense headquarters in Damascus. Despite these efforts, reports indicated that at least 30 villages suffered damage from arson and destruction. The Fellowship had previously provided aid in April when similar attacks occurred, distributing food boxes to Druze communities near Israel’s border.
Safwan Marich from the Israeli Druze community highlighted the religious motivations behind the violence, emphasizing the need for solidarity among Jews and Christians. He stressed the importance of supporting the Druze community globally, noting that Israeli Druze have also suffered casualties defending Israel. The situation underscores the potential threat posed by radical Islamists gaining influence near Israel’s borders.
Eckstein emphasized the significance of Judeo-Christian values in confronting this crisis, advocating for unity against what she described as a battle between good and evil. The Fellowship’s actions reflect a commitment to providing life-saving aid in enemy territory despite opposition from Islamist groups.
