Christie Brinkley, the renowned model and actress, recently shared her thoughts on the evolving nature of marriage during an episode of the “Are You a Charlotte?” podcast with host Kristin Davis. The discussion centered around whether marriage is becoming an outdated institution in today’s fast-paced world. Brinkley suggested a novel approach to marriage, proposing that couples could consider renewing their vows every five years. This idea, she explained, would allow partners to reassess their relationship without the complexities of legal proceedings if they choose to part ways.
Brinkley, who has been married four times, brings a wealth of personal experience to the conversation. Her first marriage to Jean-François Allaux lasted from 1973 to 1981. She later married musician Billy Joel from 1985 to 1994, followed by Richard Taubman from 1994 to 1995, and Peter Cook from 1996 to 2008. These marriages resulted in three children: Alexa Ray Joel with Billy Joel, and Jack and Sailor Lee Brinkley-Cook with Peter Cook.
In a candid interview with The New York Times, Brinkley reflected on her past relationships, admitting that she has been “too trusting” and a “fool for love.” She acknowledged that maintaining love requires effort and sometimes expert guidance. Despite the challenges she faced, Brinkley remains optimistic about love, believing that she is lovable in the right relationship.
Brinkley also touched upon her experiences with modern dating apps, which she tried at the behest of her daughter Sailor. Although initially hesitant, she was intrigued by the results and shared humorous anecdotes about her encounters on these platforms.
Brinkley’s memoir “Uptown Girl” delves into her personal life and relationships, offering relatable insights into divorce and the ups and downs of love. Additionally, in the HBO documentary “Billy Joel: And So it Goes,” she discussed her marriage to Joel, highlighting how his demanding schedule and drinking habits strained their relationship.
