A tragic incident unfolded at Glacier National Park when a climber, Brian Astle, 42, from Provo, Utah, lost his life during a rock climbing expedition. The accident occurred on the west face of Mount Gould, a prominent peak within the park. Astle was descending a steep, off-trail route when he fell, leading to his untimely death. The incident was reported to Glacier National Park Dispatch just before 6 p.m. on July 9.
Following the report of the fall, park rangers collaborated with aerial search and rescue teams to locate Astle. Due to safety concerns, the recovery operation was postponed overnight. The following morning, rangers successfully located Astle’s body and transported it to a nearby horse corral before moving it to the coroner’s office. The National Park Service has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, with no further details available at this time.
Mount Gould stands at 9,557 feet and is recognized as the highest point along the Garden Wall in Glacier National Park. The park is renowned for its stunning glacial lakes, waterfalls, valleys, and alpine meadows. However, it is also known for its rapidly changing and extreme weather conditions. Visitors are advised to be prepared for a variety of weather scenarios when exploring the park.
This tragic event follows a similar incident in August 2024 when Grant Marcuccio, 32, from Whitefish, Montana, was found dead after separating from his hiking party to summit McPartland Peak alone. Marcuccio suffered traumatic injuries from an apparent fall. These incidents underscore the inherent risks associated with climbing in such challenging environments.
The National Park Service has expressed its deepest condolences to Brian Astle’s family and has requested that the public respect their privacy during this difficult time.
