Clown Leader Criticizes Use of ‘Clown’ Label for Trump in Op-Ed

Tim Cunningham, a professional clown and president of the nonprofit Clowns Without Borders, expressed his disapproval of the term “clown” being used to describe President Donald Trump and his administration in a Washington Post op-ed. Cunningham argued that the frequent use of “clown” as an insult in political discourse undermines the art form and profession of clowning. He highlighted instances where prominent figures like Democratic Strategist James Carville and MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell referred to Trump as a “humiliated clown.” Additionally, he noted protests labeled “Kick out the Clowns” across the United States.

Cunningham emphasized that the term should not be used in politics, as it diminishes the joyful and meaningful work clowns do worldwide. He pointed out that both liberals and conservatives have misused the term, with conservatives likening the Democratic Party to a “clown show.” According to Cunningham, this misuse leads to a loss of understanding of clowning as a sacred art form. He urged people to find alternative ways to express disdain for political figures, suggesting “buffoon” as a more appropriate term.

In his op-ed, Cunningham also detailed the impactful work of Clowns Without Borders, which operates 13 chapters globally. Despite limited budgets, they perform for thousands in refugee camps and other challenging environments, using their craft to help people relax, heal, and gain new perspectives on the world. Cunningham concluded by urging readers to keep clowning out of political comparisons altogether.

The op-ed received mixed reactions on social media, with some mocking its premise. Abigail Jackson, White House Deputy Press Secretary, commented on its authenticity with a quip. Despite this, Cunningham’s message about preserving the integrity of clowning resonated with many who value the art form’s positive impact.
