A significant murder trial is set to commence in Colorado, where James Toliver Craig, a local dentist, faces charges of first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege that Craig poisoned his wife, Angela Craig, by lacing her protein shakes with cyanide while engaging in a secret affair. The trial, expected to last three weeks, will delve into the events leading up to Angela’s death in March 2023.
Angela Craig, a 43-year-old mother of six, began experiencing severe symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, and headaches in early March 2023. Her condition rapidly deteriorated over ten days, culminating in blurred vision, seizures, and a coma. She was declared brain-dead on August 18, 2023. The official cause of death was acute poisoning by cyanide and tetrahydrozoline.
The investigation into Angela’s death intensified when James’ dental colleague, Ryan Redfearn, reported a suspicious chemical delivery to hospital staff and police. Redfearn suspected James had ordered potassium cyanide, a substance not used in dentistry. This led to the involvement of the Aurora Police Department Major Crimes Homicide Unit.
Court documents reveal that James allegedly used a secret email account to research undetectable poisons and purchase arsenic and cyanide. He also reportedly watched videos on how to kill without leaving traces. The investigation uncovered intimate emails between James and Karin Cain, a Texas orthodontist with whom he was allegedly having an affair.
Angela had confided in her sister about her troubled marriage and intentions to leave James multiple times over 16 years. The couple faced financial difficulties, nearing bankruptcy for the second time. James had reportedly engaged in multiple affairs and previously drugged Angela.
James was arrested in mid-March 2023 and charged with multiple offenses, including solicitation to commit murder. His trial faced delays when his attorney withdrew due to ethical concerns. The trial is now set to begin with jury selection on July 14 and is expected to conclude by August 1.
