Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders addressed the media at the Big 12 media day, emphasizing his commitment to his team over personal health concerns. Despite recent health issues that kept him away from the team during parts of the spring and early summer, Sanders assured everyone that he is back to normal and ready to lead his team into the new season. He expressed excitement about meeting new players and preparing for the upcoming year, stating, “I’m here today. I’m handling my responsibilities. So, I look forward to it. I can’t wait.”
Sanders has a history of health challenges, including blood clots in his legs and a significant surgery in 2021 that resulted in the amputation of two toes on his left foot. These issues have been well-documented during his coaching tenure at Jackson State, where he missed three games due to hospitalization. However, Sanders remains optimistic and focused on his coaching duties, alongside former Dallas Cowboys teammate Michael Irvin, who was also present at the media day.
During the event, Sanders reiterated his desire to concentrate on football rather than health discussions. He stated confidently, “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team.” Sanders also highlighted his contentment with life, saying he is “living lovely” and feels blessed.
Sanders recently secured a five-year contract extension worth $54 million with the Buffaloes, underscoring his long-term commitment to the program. As his son Shedeur Sanders embarks on his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, Coach Prime is tasked with selecting a new quarterback for Colorado. Kaidon Salter, a transfer from Liberty, and Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis are competing for the starting position. Salter acknowledged that while there has been “less contact” with Sanders recently, the team prioritizes their coach’s health and wants him to return fully healthy.
The Big 12 media day provided an opportunity for Sanders to reassure fans and players of his readiness for the upcoming season while maintaining focus on team development and success.
