In Manchester, New Hampshire, the all-Democrat congressional delegation is uniting to oppose President Donald Trump’s newly signed domestic policy bill. The legislation, described by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen as “the big beautiful betrayal of the American people,” has sparked significant controversy due to its sweeping tax cuts and spending measures. Passed by narrow margins in the Republican-controlled House and Senate, the bill has been criticized by Sen. Maggie Hassan for being “immoral, irrational, and impractical.”
Rep. Chris Pappas, who is campaigning to succeed the retiring Shaheen, labeled the bill a “disaster for the American people.” First-term Rep. Maggie Goodlander warned that it would increase living costs for thousands across New Hampshire. The bill, which incorporates many of Trump’s 2024 campaign promises, extends his 2017 tax cuts and eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay. It also allocates billions for border security and enforces a controversial immigration crackdown.
However, the $3.4 trillion package is projected to increase the national debt by $4 trillion over the next decade. It also restructures Medicaid and cuts food stamps to offset the extended tax cuts. These changes have drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, who argue that the bill imposes significant healthcare cuts to fund tax breaks for the wealthy.
At a gathering in New Hampshire’s largest city, Waypoint—a charitable organization serving Medicaid recipients—officials highlighted that three-quarters of their clients rely on Medicaid. Sen. Hassan noted widespread opposition to the bill from constituents across political affiliations.
Despite Republican control of Congress and the White House, Democrats are mobilizing their base against Trump’s agenda. Progressive activists in New Hampshire express frustration with current Democratic strategies, urging more aggressive opposition tactics.
Republicans have criticized Democrats for opposing the bill, emphasizing its tax cuts. The New Hampshire Republican Party accused Rep. Pappas of supporting a massive tax hike, though Pappas advocates for targeted tax relief for working families and small businesses.
The National Republican Congressional Committee plans to make this vote a focal point in future elections, while Democrats aim to regain control of the House by highlighting the bill’s impact on living costs.
