The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported a significant 830% increase in assaults on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. This alarming rise, recorded between January 21, 2025, and July 14, 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, coincides with President Donald Trump’s return to office. DHS attributes this surge to inflammatory rhetoric from Democrat politicians and the mainstream media, which they claim incites violence against ICE personnel.
DHS has specifically accused Congressional Democrats of exacerbating anti-ICE sentiment. Notably, Rep. Salud Carbajal from California allegedly shared an ICE employee’s business card with a violent group, leading to an attack on the officer. The officer was injured by a rock and required medical attention. In another incident, Rep. LaMonica McIver from New Jersey is accused of assaulting an ICE officer at the Delaney Hall detention facility in May, resulting in federal assault charges.
The DHS has also criticized certain media outlets for spreading false narratives about ICE operations. They cited an incident where media reports falsely claimed a man died in custody during an enforcement operation that rescued children from exploitation. DHS clarified that the individual was not pursued by law enforcement but fell from a roof independently.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the critical role of ICE officers in removing dangerous criminals from communities. Despite their efforts, officers face increased threats due to what DHS describes as “crazed rhetoric” from political figures and media misinformation. The department highlighted incidents in Portland, Oregon, where antifa-affiliated groups doxed ICE officers, threatening their safety and that of their families.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem called for bipartisan condemnation of violence against law enforcement officers. She stressed the importance of supporting ICE agents who risk their lives daily to uphold immigration laws and protect communities.
