The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has recently updated its driving licence regulations under the Markhoos initiative, specifically addressing the rules for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals. This update clarifies the conditions under which GCC citizens can drive in the UAE using their home country licences and outlines the process for exchanging these licences upon acquiring UAE residency.
GCC nationals visiting the UAE are permitted to drive using their home country driving licences. This provision allows for seamless travel and convenience for short-term visitors from neighboring GCC countries. However, this privilege is limited to the duration of their visit and does not extend to those who become residents.
Once a GCC national becomes a resident of the UAE, they are required to exchange their home country driving licence for a UAE licence. This process ensures that all drivers in the UAE meet the local standards and regulations, promoting road safety and uniformity across the nation.
For individuals who were previously residents of a GCC country but hold citizenship from another nation, additional testing may be required to obtain a UAE driving licence. The necessity of these tests depends on their nationality, as certain countries have specific agreements with the UAE regarding licence recognition.
In addition to GCC nationals, the UAE’s updated policy includes provisions for citizens from 52 other countries. These individuals are eligible for direct licence recognition and exchange, streamlining the process for obtaining a UAE driving licence without additional testing or requirements.
