A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Haryana’s Jhajjar district, sending strong tremors across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on [date]. The quake, recorded at a depth of 10 km by the National Institute of Seismology, caused significant shaking in various parts of Delhi, prompting residents to evacuate their homes as ceiling fans and other household items swayed. The tremors were felt at approximately 9:04 am, affecting office areas in Noida and Gurugram where computer systems shook, leading some professionals to step outside for safety.
The impact of the earthquake extended to western Uttar Pradesh, with reports of tremors in Meerut and Shamli, located about 200 km from the epicenter in Jhajjar. Social media platforms were abuzz with people sharing their experiences, many highlighting the prolonged duration of the tremors.
In response to the earthquake, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued an advisory urging calm and advising people to use stairs instead of elevators when evacuating buildings. The NDRF also recommended that drivers pull over to open spaces if caught on the road during such events.
Delhi’s susceptibility to earthquakes is well-documented due to its location in Seismic Zone 4, which is prone to higher seismic activity. The region is near several active fault lines, including the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge and the Sohna Fault. Historical records indicate that since 1720, Delhi has experienced at least five significant earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 5.5 on the Richter scale.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority notes that seismic activity around Delhi is linked to major geological structures like the Delhi-Hardwar Ridge, which aligns with the Aravali Mountain belt extending beneath the Ganga basin towards the Himalayas. This geological setting underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness in mitigating earthquake risks in the region.
