Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson recently shared a humorous anecdote about receiving a phone call from Donald Trump on the day her divorce was finalized. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where she was honored with the Leopard Club Award, Thompson recounted the unexpected moment while filming the 1998 dramedy ‘Primary Colors’. The 66-year-old British actress described how she was in her trailer when she answered the phone to hear Trump’s voice.

Trump’s Unusual Invitation

Thompson initially thought the call was a prank. Trump introduced himself and extended an invitation, saying, “I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.” Surprised by the offer, Thompson politely responded, “Well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”

Reflecting on the Timing

Reflecting on the timing of the call, Thompson noted that her divorce decree had just been finalized that day. She humorously speculated that Trump might have been searching for a newly single woman to accompany him. “You know, a nice divorcee, that’s what he was looking for,” she joked.

A Hypothetical Change in History

Thompson playfully considered how accepting Trump’s invitation might have altered history. “I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history,” she mused.

Interestingly, actress Salma Hayek also shared a similar experience with Trump. Hayek recounted how Trump asked her out despite her being in a relationship at the time. He allegedly told her that her boyfriend wasn’t good enough for her and suggested she should date him instead. Emma Thompson’s divorce from actor Kenneth Branagh was finalized after their marriage from 1989 to 1995. She later married Greg Wise in 2003.
