Mayor Eric Adams is embroiled in a legal battle as a former high-ranking New York Police Department official, Tom Donlon, has filed a lawsuit accusing him of orchestrating a “criminal conspiracy” within the department. The lawsuit, submitted to the New York state Supreme Court in Manhattan, claims that top officials were involved in activities aimed at personal enrichment. Donlon’s allegations suggest that the conspiracy involved wire fraud, mail fraud, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice, and retaliation against whistleblowers.
According to Donlon, the alleged misconduct by New York City officials amounts to racketeering. He describes the NYPD as “criminal at its core,” asserting that the lawsuit is not driven by personal grievances but is a stand against systemic corruption. Donlon aims to expose what he perceives as a betrayal of public trust and seeks accountability for those he believes are abusing their power.
In response to the allegations, Kayla Mamelak Altus, spokesperson for Mayor Adams, dismissed the claims as “baseless accusations from a disgruntled former employee.” She argued that Donlon’s lawsuit is an attempt to gain compensation at taxpayers’ expense following his removal from the interim police commissioner role. Mamelak Altus expressed confidence that the court would disprove these claims, emphasizing that the NYPD is led by highly capable professionals and highlighting a decrease in crime rates across the city.
The lawsuit comes at a critical time for Mayor Adams, who is campaigning for re-election as an independent. He faces competition from Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo running as an independent, and Republican activist Curtis Sliwa. The legal proceedings could impact his campaign, especially as he contends with Mamdani’s democratic socialist platform and Cuomo’s political resurgence.
