In a recent development, Bruce Reed, a former aide in the Biden administration, disclosed to House investigators that Dr. Kevin O’Connor, President Biden’s former physician, considered cognitive tests “meaningless.” This revelation came during Reed’s interview with the House Oversight Committee, where he became the ninth member of Biden’s inner circle to be questioned. According to a source familiar with the proceedings, Reed shared insights into the 2024 presidential debate performance and its aftermath.
Reed attributed President Biden’s challenging debate performance against Donald Trump in 2024 to his well-documented stutter, a condition Biden has publicly acknowledged. Despite this explanation, Biden’s demeanor during the debate raised concerns among Democrats and media pundits about his age and mental acuity. These concerns led to calls from left-wing lawmakers for Biden to withdraw from the race, which he eventually did in July 2024.
When questioned about public concerns regarding Biden’s mental faculties, Reed reportedly stated that Americans should not have worried about the former president’s cognitive abilities. He also mentioned that Biden’s communications team anticipated questions about cognitive tests during an interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos following the debate.
Dr. O’Connor was summoned by House investigators but invoked the Fifth Amendment during his brief session to avoid violating doctor-patient confidentiality. Reed defended the decision to hold an early debate as a strategic move unrelated to concerns about Biden’s age. He emphasized Biden’s work ethic and decision-making capabilities throughout his presidency.
Chairman James Comer is investigating whether senior aides attempted to conceal evidence of mental decline in President Biden. Of particular interest are clemency orders signed by autopen, raising questions about who made final executive decisions. Allies of Biden have dismissed Comer’s probe as politically motivated.
