Former Maldives Minister Commends India and PM Modi Amid Renewed Diplomatic Ties

Renewed Diplomatic Relations Between India and Maldives

A year after diplomatic tensions arose between India and the Maldives due to remarks made by three Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the relationship between the two nations appears to be on the mend. The initial strain was exacerbated by the Maldives’ growing closeness with China, raising geopolitical concerns for India. However, recent developments indicate a reset in bilateral ties.

PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit to the Maldives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Male on July 25 and 26, marking him as the first foreign head of state to be hosted by President Mohamed Muizzu. During his visit, PM Modi will inaugurate development projects funded by India and celebrate the Maldives’ Independence Day. Additionally, he will engage in bilateral talks with President Muizzu, focusing on national security concerns in the Indian Ocean Region. This visit follows India’s decision to extend crucial financial support by rolling over a $50 million Treasury bill for another year.

Praise from Former Maldivian Leaders

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid praised India’s role as a reliable first responder during emergencies. He highlighted India’s generosity and geographical proximity as key factors in their supportive relationship. Similarly, former President Mohamed Nasheed acknowledged India’s critical economic support, stating that without it, the Maldives would have faced financial default.

Challenges and Opportunities in Bilateral Relations

Despite past diplomatic tensions, India has maintained a people-to-people relationship with the Maldives, emphasizing long-standing ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, and commercial ties. However, President Muizzu’s election on an ‘India out’ platform and his perceived pro-China stance initially threatened this closeness. His actions, such as allowing a Chinese spy ship to dock and seeking more Chinese tourists, raised concerns in Delhi.

A Path Forward for India-Maldives Relations

Fortunately, relations began to improve following visits by Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and President Muizzu to each other’s countries. President Muizzu reassured that while enhancing cooperation with other nations, the Maldives remains committed to not compromising regional security and stability. This diplomatic thaw underscores the enduring partnership between India and the Maldives.
