A fundraising campaign has been initiated on GiveSendGo for Sade Perkins, a former Democratic mayoral appointee in Houston, Texas, following her controversial remarks about the racial composition of Camp Mystic, where 27 girls tragically died in recent floods. Perkins described the camp as a “Whites-only girls Christian camp,” sparking significant backlash. She questioned whether the media coverage would differ if the victims were Hispanic or Black, suggesting racial bias in the response to the tragedy.
Perkins’ comments have ignited a heated debate about race and media coverage. In a video, she criticized the lack of diversity at Camp Mystic and implied that racial dynamics influence public attention and empathy. Her remarks have led to widespread criticism, with many accusing her of racial insensitivity. The fundraiser, titled “Support for Sade Perkins,” aims to provide her with legal support and protection against what organizers describe as “racialized violence.”
The campaign was created by Marian Hills, who argues that Perkins is being unfairly targeted for voicing concerns about racial disparities. As of Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had collected just over $400 towards its $20,000 goal. Despite the modest amount raised so far, the campaign has attracted significant attention, both supportive and critical. Many donations are accompanied by comments, some of which include racial slurs and threats.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire reportedly stated that Perkins was dismissed to address public outrage; however, Hills claims Perkins resigned when her term ended in January. Amidst the controversy, Perkins’ boyfriend, Rev. Colin Bossen, publicly disavowed her comments, acknowledging the harm they caused to those affected by the floods.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions around race and media representation in disaster response. The fundraiser seeks to assist Perkins in coping with the reputational damage and emotional distress resulting from her statements.
