Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed his views on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in One Day Internationals (ODIs). On Sunday, Ganguly highlighted the importance of performance as the key criterion for their continued participation in the format. Both players have established remarkable records in ODIs, and Ganguly believes they should remain active as long as they maintain their high standards.
Recent media reports have suggested that the upcoming ODI series in Australia might be the last for these cricketing icons. However, Ganguly clarified that he is unaware of any such developments. He refrained from commenting on the speculation, emphasizing that performance should dictate their future in ODIs. “Whoever does well will play,” he stated, underscoring the significance of consistent performance.
Ganguly praised both Kohli and Sharma for their exceptional contributions to white-ball cricket. He noted that Kohli’s one-day record is extraordinary, as is Sharma’s. Their achievements in ODIs have set a high benchmark, making them invaluable assets to the Indian team.
The tour of Australia in October could potentially mark the final ODI appearances for Kohli and Sharma. The series will commence on October 19, with matches scheduled in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney. Following this, India will host South Africa for three ODIs in December. The 2026 calendar includes series against New Zealand, Afghanistan, England, the West Indies, and another contest against New Zealand.
Ganguly also shared his thoughts on India’s prospects in upcoming tournaments. He expressed confidence in India’s strength, particularly in white-ball cricket. With the T20 Asia Cup set to begin on September 9 in Dubai, Ganguly believes India are favorites due to their recent break after a demanding Test series in England.
In addition to his insights on cricket, Ganguly revealed his intentions to return to cricket administration. He expressed willingness to file a nomination for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president’s post if members desire it. Ganguly previously served as CAB president from mid-2015 to October 2019.
