Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disapproval of England pacer Chris Woakes’ decision to dive in the field, which resulted in a shoulder injury. The incident occurred during India’s first innings on Day 1 of the Test match, when Woakes attempted to save a boundary hit by Karun Nair. Landing awkwardly on his left shoulder, Woakes was forced to leave the field, clutching his shoulder and using his sweater as a makeshift sling. Gavaskar, speaking on Sony Sports, criticized fast bowlers for taking unnecessary risks in the field, emphasizing that their primary role is to bowl effectively rather than prevent single runs.
Woakes’ injury has significant implications for England’s bowling lineup, which is already stretched thin due to the absence of key players. With Woakes out, England’s attack lacks experience, as the remaining bowlers have only 18 Test caps combined. This situation is exacerbated by the absence of captain Ben Stokes, who is also sidelined with a shoulder injury. Woakes has been a crucial player for England throughout the series, having bowled 181 overs and taken 11 wickets at an average of 52.18.
Gavaskar also touched upon the rules regarding player substitutions in cricket. While like-for-like replacements are allowed for concussed players, injured players can only be substituted for fielding or wicketkeeping roles, not for batting or bowling. This rule was highlighted when Dhruv Jurel substituted as a wicketkeeper for Rishabh Pant in a previous match after Pant sustained a foot injury. However, Jurel did not bat, as current regulations permit only the original player to bat.
With Woakes’ absence adding to England’s challenges, the team faces an uphill battle in the final Test. The loss of experienced players like Woakes and Stokes puts additional pressure on the less experienced members of the squad to step up and deliver strong performances.
