San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle humorously expressed his discontent with the NFL’s recent ban on smelling salts during a teammate’s interview. The league’s decision, communicated through a memo, prohibits the use of ammonia products before and during games. Kittle, known for his energetic performances, admitted that he regularly used smelling salts for a pre-game energy boost. “I honestly just came up here to air a grievance,” Kittle stated on NFL Network, highlighting his frustration with the new rule.
The memo, shared by ESPN, outlines that teams are no longer allowed to provide or supply ammonia in any form, including capsules and inhalers. This restriction applies throughout the game, covering pregame activities, halftime, and sideline use. The decision follows a 2024 FDA warning about the potential negative effects of ammonia inhalants (AIs) and their lack of proven efficacy in enhancing mental alertness or energy. The NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee recommended this prohibition to prevent masking neurological symptoms, such as those indicating concussions.
In response to the memo, Kittle jokingly mentioned considering retirement. Although made in jest, his comment reflects broader concerns among players about finding alternative energy sources on game days. “We have got to figure out a middle ground here, guys,” he said, seeking solutions to adapt to the new directive.
Entering his ninth year with the 49ers, Kittle remains one of the top tight ends in the league. Coming off a season with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, he will need to adjust his pre-game routine moving forward. Despite the ban, Kittle is expected to continue delivering strong performances for San Francisco.
