In a surprising revelation, a fake embassy operating in Ghaziabad, near Delhi, has been uncovered by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF). The operation was run by Harshvardhan Jain, who had meticulously crafted an elaborate facade to carry out illegal activities. The embassy, housed in a luxurious two-storey building, featured cars with diplomatic number plates and a nameplate reading “Grand Duchy of Westarctica” alongside “H E HV Jain Honorary Consul.” This setup was part of a larger scheme to deceive individuals seeking employment abroad.
Jain’s operation included the use of forged diplomatic documents and passports from 12 micronations. The STF’s investigation led to the recovery of numerous items, including cars with diplomatic plates, documents bearing stamps from the External Affairs Ministry and 34 nations, Rs 44 lakh in cash, foreign currency, 18 diplomatic number plates, and a collection of luxury watches. Jain’s office displayed altered photographs showing him with prominent world leaders, further enhancing his guise as a legitimate diplomat.
Jain’s criminal activities date back to at least 2011 when he was implicated in a case involving the possession of a satellite phone. His connections to controversial figures such as Chandraswami and Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi have also come to light. Chandraswami, known for his influence over several Indian Prime Ministers, was embroiled in financial scandals and linked to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Jain’s association with such individuals underscores his dubious past.
The fake embassy purportedly represented the Grand Duchy of Westarctica, a micronation founded by Travis McHenry, a US Navy officer. Although Westarctica is not recognized by any sovereign state, it claims to have 2,356 citizens and operates as a non-profit organization raising awareness about climate change. Jain’s role as ‘Baron’ and Consul-General of this micronation was part of his elaborate ruse.
The discovery of this fake embassy highlights significant security concerns and the potential for exploitation under the guise of diplomacy. It underscores the need for vigilance against such fraudulent operations that prey on unsuspecting individuals seeking opportunities abroad. The case serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in monitoring and regulating diplomatic activities within India.
