Ahead of the fourth Test against England in Manchester, Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill has clarified the team’s lineup, addressing the suspense surrounding player selections. The match, set to begin on Wednesday, comes as India trails England 1-2 in the five-match series. The team has faced significant injury setbacks, with allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh also unavailable for the upcoming game. Additionally, Akash Deep, who impressed with 10 wickets in India’s victory over England in Birmingham, will not participate in the fourth Test.
Gill revealed that Anshul Kamboj is on the verge of making his international debut. The 24-year-old pacer has played 24 games and taken 79 wickets, showcasing his potential with a first-class half-century. Gill expressed confidence in Kamboj’s abilities, stating, “We have seen his skill set. We believe he can win matches for us.” The decision between Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna will be finalized before the match.
The team management remains optimistic about Karun Nair’s performance despite his struggles in the series so far. After three Tests at Headingley, Edgbaston, and Lord’s, Nair has accumulated only 131 runs at an average slightly below 22. Gill defended Nair’s batting capabilities, emphasizing that he is batting well and is expected to improve his form. Nair’s scores of 0, 20, 31, 26, 40, and 14 reflect his ongoing challenge to find consistency.
Gill confirmed that Rishabh Pant will serve as the designated wicketkeeper for the fourth Test. Pant had limited involvement behind the stumps during the third Test due to an injury, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in for most of the match. Jurel’s performance was marred by conceding 25 byes during England’s second innings, contributing to India’s narrow 22-run defeat. As India prepares for this crucial encounter against England, these strategic decisions could play a pivotal role in leveling the series.
