In a puzzling incident, broken glass pieces were discovered along a 1-kilometer stretch of road in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi. This route is notably used by barefoot pilgrims participating in the Kanwar Yatra. The discovery has raised concerns about the safety of the pilgrims and prompted an investigation by local authorities.
Initial investigations by the police have linked the incident to an e-rickshaw transporting glass panels. The vehicle reportedly carried 19 large glass panels between Delhi’s Seemapuri and Uttar Pradesh’s Shalimar Bagh. Authorities are working to determine how the glass broke into small pieces during transit and whether there was any malicious intent involved.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Minister Kapil Mishra addressed the issue on social media, highlighting the potential risks to pilgrims. The police, along with the Public Works Department (PWD), acted promptly to clear the road within two hours of the discovery. An FIR has been filed, and further investigations are being conducted by the crime branch.
The e-rickshaw driver, identified as Kusum Pal from Nand Nagri, Delhi, has been detained for questioning. Authorities are probing whether there was any deliberate attempt to disrupt the Kanwar Yatra or if it was an unfortunate accident.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva suggesting a possible conspiracy by anti-social elements to disturb social harmony. He criticized certain political parties for their silence on the matter, implying potential appeasement politics.
South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankit Chauhan has met with Kanwar camp organizers to ensure adherence to safety guidelines. Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra assured that no disruptions would be tolerated during the religious event, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security.
