Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has announced the appointment of Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as a senior adviser. Sunak, who led the UK government from October 2022 to July 2024, will leverage his extensive experience to provide strategic guidance to clients worldwide. His role will involve collaborating with leaders across the New York-based financial institution to offer insights on macroeconomic and geopolitical issues, according to a statement by Chief Executive Officer David Solomon.
Before his tenure as Prime Minister, Sunak served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from February 2020 to July 2022. He also held positions as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. His political career began in 2015 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament.
Despite leading the Conservative Party to a significant defeat in the last general election, Sunak continues to represent Richmond and Northallerton in northern England as an MP. He has committed to serving his constituency for the entire duration of the next Parliament, irrespective of electoral outcomes. The next general election could be called by Labour’s Keir Starmer as late as mid-2029.
Sunak’s connection with Goldman Sachs dates back to his early career when he joined the firm as a summer intern in investment banking in 2000 and later worked as an analyst from 2001 to 2004. Following his stint at Goldman, he co-founded an investment firm that collaborated with companies on a global scale.
