The Limitations of Current Battery Technology

Traditional batteries typically provide only about four hours of backup power, which is insufficient for prolonged outages or periods of low renewable energy production. Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery offers a solution by providing clean, dispatchable energy for up to 24 hours. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which rely on expensive materials, the CO2 Battery uses readily available mechanical components and basic physics principles.

How the CO2 Battery Works

The CO2 Battery stores electricity by compressing carbon dioxide gas into a liquid form. When additional electricity is needed, the system heats and expands the liquid CO2 back into a gas, spinning a turbine to generate power. This closed-loop process efficiently balances power demand and supply without emitting carbon.

Proven Technology with Global Potential

Energy Dome has successfully operated its first commercial facility in Italy for over three years, demonstrating the viability of this technology. With a capacity of 20 megawatts and 200 megawatt-hours, the plant showcases carbon dioxide’s potential in enhancing renewable energy reliability. Google’s support could accelerate the global adoption of this technology, helping meet its goal of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.
