Delhi experienced significant disruption as relentless heavy rains led to severe waterlogging across the city. Key areas such as Vasant Kunj and Connaught Place were particularly affected, with roads submerged under water, causing major traffic jams and leaving many vehicles stranded. The situation has raised concerns about the city’s drainage infrastructure and its ability to cope with extreme weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) initially issued a red alert for Delhi, indicating the potential for extreme weather events. However, this was later downgraded to a yellow alert, forecasting continued thunderstorms until August 12. The Safdarjung area recorded a substantial 78.7 mm of rainfall, highlighting the intensity of the downpour.
The heavy rains have not only disrupted traffic but also affected daily life in Delhi. Commuters faced long delays, and public transport services were hampered by the flooded roads. The waterlogging has also raised health concerns, with stagnant water posing a risk of waterborne diseases.
Authorities are working to address the immediate challenges posed by the flooding, deploying pumps to clear waterlogged areas and advising residents to avoid non-essential travel. The situation underscores the need for improved urban planning and infrastructure development to better manage such weather events in the future.
