Heroic Former Officer Dies Saving Swimmers from Rip Current

Tragic Heroism on South Carolina Beach

Chase Childers, a former Georgia police officer and ex-minor league baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles, tragically lost his life while performing a heroic act. On July 13, Childers drowned after attempting to rescue several swimmers caught in a rip current near Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Despite his efforts, Childers was unable to return to shore, and emergency responders recovered his body approximately 90 minutes after the distress call was made.

Community and Official Responses

The Pawleys Island Police Department released a statement on X, acknowledging Childers’ bravery and confirming that he entered the water alongside another individual to assist four to five swimmers in distress. Unfortunately, Childers was also caught in the powerful current. The search and recovery operation included Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard. Pawleys Island Mayor Brian Henry expressed the town’s sorrow over the incident on Facebook, offering condolences to Childers’ family and gratitude to the first responders involved in the recovery efforts.

Efforts to Prevent Future Tragedies

Mayor Henry emphasized the importance of addressing beach safety concerns, stating that the town council would explore all possible measures to mitigate future risks associated with rip currents. This includes initiatives aimed at educating visitors about the dangers posed by these natural phenomena.

Community Support for Childers’ Family

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page was established in memory of Chase Childers. The campaign has exceeded its fundraising goal, amassing over $104,000 to support his wife, Nataley, and their children. The funds are intended to help the family cope with their loss and honor Childers’ legacy as a hero who selflessly dedicated his life to saving others.

A Legacy of Service and Bravery

During his tenure as a police officer in Cobb County, Georgia, Childers was recognized with a lifetime achievement award for saving multiple lives. This accolade underscores his commitment to public service and his enduring impact on those he served.
