The recent flash floods in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in a tragic loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure. As of July 6, the death toll has reached 78, with 50 fatalities attributed to rain-related incidents and 28 to road accidents, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). The monsoon, which began on June 20, has brought about 23 flash floods, 19 cloud bursts, and 16 landslides, drastically altering the state’s landscape. In the town of Thunag, residents are grappling with the destruction of the Himachal Cooperative Bank. The bank’s first floor is submerged in water and debris, leaving the community uncertain about the extent of financial losses. Local trader Hari Mohan highlighted the bank’s significance as the sole financial institution for a population of eight thousand. Efforts are underway to protect the bank from theft as valuables swept away by floods are at risk of being stolen. The state faces significant infrastructural challenges, with 243 roads, including two national highways, closed. Additionally, 278 electricity transfers are stalled, and 261 water projects are non-operational. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted severe weather conditions, issuing a red alert for Sirmaur, Kangra, and Mandi districts and an orange alert for seven others. Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, a landslide warning has been issued for Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli districts by the Geological Survey of India. The alert anticipates potential landslides on July 7 and 8 in several subdivisions. In response, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) has instructed all relevant authorities to remain vigilant. Measures include restricting tourist movement in high Himalayan regions and ensuring strategic deployment of essential equipment to manage roads and landslide-prone areas effectively.
