In a shocking incident that has sent ripples across Bangladesh, a Hindu scrap trader named Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, was brutally lynched near Mitford Hospital. The attack, which occurred on July 9, has led to the arrest of at least seven individuals. In response to the heinous crime, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced a nationwide combing operation to maintain law and order and ensure stability ahead of upcoming elections. The operation aims to apprehend all those involved in the murder.
Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to justice, stating that no criminal will be spared, regardless of political affiliations. The Detective Branch (DB) of police has been actively pursuing leads, resulting in the arrest of two more suspects on Saturday night. The government plans to expedite the judicial process by transferring the case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
A disturbing video of the incident went viral, showing the attackers using concrete slabs to lynch Lal Chand. After confirming his death, they were seen dancing on his body, an act that has been widely condemned as barbaric. The video has fueled public anger and led to widespread protests across the country. Hundreds of students took to the streets on Saturday, criticizing the interim government for its inability to curb mob violence.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of mob violence in Bangladesh. Earlier this month, a woman and her children were killed in Cumilla’s Muradnagar area over alleged drug dealing accusations. Since August 2024, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League regime, there has been a noticeable increase in such violent acts. The movement led by Students Against Discrimination (SAD) has highlighted the need for stronger measures to prevent mob justice.
