Filmmaker Honey Trehan is facing significant challenges with his film Punjab ’95, which stars Diljit Dosanjh as human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film has been embroiled in a prolonged battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) since December 2022. The board has demanded 127 cuts, leaving Trehan frustrated and questioning the integrity of the film’s release. He expressed his dissatisfaction to NDTV, stating that if the film is released with these cuts, it would no longer represent his directorial vision.
Trehan has been vocal about the illogical nature of some of the CBFC’s demands. He highlighted specific instances where the board’s requests seemed unreasonable, such as removing ‘Punjab’ from the film’s title and altering references to Punjabi police officers. Trehan argues that these changes compromise the essence of the story and its historical context. He also questioned the partiality in allowing other films to reference political figures like Indira Gandhi while restricting his film from doing so.
Despite the ongoing battle with the CBFC, Trehan has conducted private screenings of Punjab ’95 in various cities. These screenings have been attended by well-read individuals who have provided feedback on the film. Trehan emphasized that he has not sought media attention but instead encouraged viewers to share their thoughts on the film’s content and the challenges it faces.
Trehan expressed deep frustration over the situation, highlighting how it impacts artistic freedom and democracy. He lamented that after two and a half years of patience, his ability to express through art is being stifled. The director concluded by stating that if the film is released with CBFC’s imposed cuts, it would no longer be his creation but rather a product shaped by external pressures.
