House Republicans Weigh Options in Biden Investigation

House Oversight Committee Republicans are contemplating the possibility of summoning former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden to testify before Congress. This consideration is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that signs of President Biden’s mental decline were concealed during his tenure in the White House. According to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., all options are being considered to expedite the process and uncover the truth. Comer emphasized the committee’s commitment to exploring every avenue, stating, “Every option’s on the table. We’re going to try to get answers. We’re going to try to do this rapidly.”

Calls for High-Profile Testimonies Intensify

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., has been vocal about his desire for more prominent figures to be called upon as witnesses. Speaking on his own behalf, Donalds expressed his belief that every member of the Biden administration should be subpoenaed, regardless of their position. He asserted, “I don’t care if they were a secretary. I don’t care if they were a janitor working in there. They’ve all got to come in and answer questions.” When asked specifically about Jill Biden, Donalds confirmed that she should also be included.

Focus on Former Aides and Allegations of Cover-Up

The investigation has already seen the deposition of Anthony Bernal, a longtime aide to Jill Biden, who was subpoenaed by the Oversight Committee. Bernal’s role as Jill Biden’s chief of staff has made him a key figure in the probe. During his deposition, Bernal invoked the Fifth Amendment, a move that Comer and Donalds found surprising. The investigation aims to determine whether any executive actions were carried out without President Biden’s full awareness, possibly using autopen technology.

Biden Allies Respond to Allegations

In response to these allegations, President Biden has maintained that he independently made all decisions during his presidency. In a recent interview with The New York Times, he affirmed his autonomy in decision-making processes. Despite this, the investigation continues to scrutinize the actions of former White House aides and their potential involvement in concealing any signs of mental or physical decline.

Subpoenas and Legal Maneuvers

So far, three former aides have been subpoenaed as part of this investigation. Alongside Bernal, former White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor and former Deputy Chief of Staff Annie Tomascini have also been called to testify. Both O’Connor and Tomascini have invoked the Fifth Amendment during their appearances before the committee.
