Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist, has expressed her satisfaction with the closure of two Planned Parenthood facilities in Houston, Texas. This development is seen as a symbolic victory for the pro-life movement. Johnson, who resigned from Planned Parenthood in 2009, highlighted the significance of these closures in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital. The facilities include a 78,000-square-foot clinic that was once the largest abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere before Texas implemented its abortion ban.
The closures are part of a broader trend affecting Planned Parenthood facilities in states with strict abortion restrictions, following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. This ruling returned the power to regulate abortion laws to individual states. In Texas, where nearly all abortions have been banned, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast announced the closure of its Prevention Park and Southwest centers by September 30. The remaining Houston facilities will be acquired by the organization’s largest Texas affiliate.
Planned Parenthood cited rising costs, staffing shortages, and low reimbursement rates as reasons for shutting down the Houston clinics. Johnson noted that these challenges have led to mergers and closures across the country. She recalled her time at Planned Parenthood when there were nearly 100 affiliates, a number that has since more than halved due to financial pressures and operational difficulties.
Despite celebrating this symbolic victory, Johnson emphasized that the pro-life movement still faces significant challenges. She pointed out that while surgical abortions are banned in Texas, women continue to access abortion services online at similar rates as before the ban. This underscores the ongoing need for pro-life advocacy and efforts to address online abortion access.
Johnson believes that GOP-led states like Texas and Louisiana have unique opportunities due to their restrictive abortion laws. However, she acknowledged that Democrat-led states continue to provide abortion services without similar setbacks, as they can maintain financial stability through these procedures.
